Renae, a lifelong resident of Newcastle, embarked on a journey of diverse experiences before finding her passion in art. Transitioning from various odd jobs to a successful career in real estate as a Property Manager and later as a licensed Real Estate professional, Renae's path took a poignant turn in 2015. Faced with family challenges, including a member's battle with cancer, Renae pivoted towards a new direction. Alongside her sisters, she founded a trauma cleaning company, serving the mental health sector. As fate would have it, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic enforced an early lockdown for her family, further amplifying the need for solace and creative outlet. It was during this period of introspection that Renae discovered needle felting—an art form that not only filled her time but also ignited her latent creativity, offering solace and exploration in uncertain times. Renae is self-taught and has used her childhood memories and years diving as inspiration.
My work is influenced by the vibrant colours and textures of nature, as well as the emotions and experiences that we all share.
Growing up, I spent all my school holidays exploring the Port Stephens coastline with my family and then my 20's/30's scuba diving along the east coast of Australia as well as overseas.
Each piece can take from 2 to 50 hours to create with the traditional needle felting technique. All pieces are created from locally sourced (where possible) 100% Australian Merino wool.
Felting involves separating, condensing, and pressing fibers together to create a solid piece of textile, whether through a wet technique or a dry technique, which is called needle felting. Needle felting involves rolling up a small amount of wool and stabbing it with a special barbed needle. When the wool is pierced with the felting needle, it pulls the wool into itself, eventually creating a round, firm shape.
This artwork was created over 320 hours using a needle felting technique.
Each piece is carefully stabbed/poked with a barbed needle while sculpted into shape.
During its creation this artwork has been stabbed/poked approx 3.5 million times.
